Dolen is very high situated village, nestled in the hills of Western Rhodopes in Bulgaria which can be
reached through a winding road with many curves. History tells us that after
Bulgaria fell under Ottoman rule several Christian families seeking refuge high
in mountains part and made it there based Dolen. And the village is located
in Dol, hence the name of the village.
The village can be reached on foot from the main junction road. You could take vehicle to there, and go back on foot .The walk is pretty nice and the view is
stunning..I do not recommend you to climb the slope to
the village alone..If you do be
very careful, there are shepherd dogs which can surprise you at any
moment.
There are about 400 inhabitant in the village. They are polite and friendly. They will stop you, they will great you and offer you help and guidance.
The last time I was in the village was in August 2010.This village grabs the visitors with the beauty of the mountain and
the spectacular view. The water is crystal clear and cold. .This is a perfect holiday for family and good reason to be away from the noisy life in a city. It is a moment were children can ride freely bike and learn about Bulgarian folklore and culture. There
are few family hotels
where you can stay for week or
two and during that
time to see some Romans, Thracians and Turkish remains.
Do not
forget to visit the church there.
